I just spent 3 thrilling days in San Jose, Costa Rica at Expotur 2012 learning about the best hotels and services that are available in this gorgeous country.

As I am writing my followup emails to the many new friends I made, I am also looking at their advertising give aways.

And it is immediately apparent that some hotels put thought in to how they were represented by their give aways…and some did not. Some actually gave the appearance of a thought process that went like this…”Oh, we should have something with our name on it for the Expo…what’s the cheapest thing we can get??”.

Now as a PROSPECT for these hotels, and by that I mean not someone who will be staying there one night, but someone who will be bringing dozens of people there a quarter, here is how I look at the giveaways.

If the give away is quality (whether it is a quality pen, a quality candy, T-shirt, whatever it is), it re-inforces the rest of the advertising that this is a top notch hotel. The more the give away reflects the unique character of the hotel,the more impressed I am. I met with over 100 people to choose 3 hotels.Impressing me should have been important to them. On the other hand, if the give away was shoddy, it did not speak well of the hotel. Case in point…one of the very most elegant and expensive hotels (rooms start at 350 a night) gave away pens that were so cheap the ink ran dry after one use. My first thought was: If they are cutting expenses on these cheapy pens, where else are they cutting expenses? Maintenance? Safety? Staff? Or more to the point…will there be bugs in that ultra expensive room?

Dont let your give aways for conventions be an after thought. Integrate what it is and the level of its quality to your overall message. If you are the least expensive hotel on the beach, then a cheap pen might be appropriate. But if you are trying to tell me that you are the BEST, you better give me something that is the BEST…even if it is just one exquisite piece of candy. That I would remember fondly.
